Explore by Water — lagoons, snorkelling, cruises
Sane & Joe’s pick: Captain Tama’s or Koka — both run brilliant lagoon cruises with snorkelling, BBQ lunch, and ukulele on the boat. Family-friendly, and the highlight of most guests’ week.
A note from Ross and Janet Holmes, owners
Captain Tama’s is a must-do. Really entertaining hosts with great tongue-in-cheek humour — they keep you laughing from start to finish on the vaka journey across Muri Lagoon to one of the motus. There’s time for snorkelling (or just watching the fish — Muri’s snorkelling is good, though not at Aitutaki’s standard) and time to wander the motu and enjoy a generous lunch of local produce and freshly caught fish.

Explore by Land — hikes, drives, scenic spots
Sane & Joe’s pick: Storytellers Eco Cycle Tours for an unhurried, story-rich morning, or Raro Safari Tours’ 4WD inland adventure if you want the high-energy version of the same island.
A note from Ross and Janet Holmes, owners
Raro Safari Tours is a great way to be introduced to Rarotonga and its hidden corners. Owned by our friend Sam Crocombe — a real character with an extraordinary knowledge of this island, and the son of the late Professor Ron Crocombe, whose scholarship is woven through Ross’s book. Sam and his team — managed now by his daughter Tea — will take you on a 4WD tour of the back roads of Rarotonga, with brilliant commentary along the way. The highlight is the climb up Sam’s family land in Atupa to a peak overlooking Avarua and Arorangi, where the views are breathtaking.

Culture — shows, museums, heritage
Sane & Joe’s pick: Te Vara Nui Village’s over-water cultural show is unlike anything else on the island — a dramatic floating stage, traditional performance, and a buffet dinner. Book ahead in peak season.
A note from Ross and Janet Holmes, owners
Highland Paradise Cultural Centre is a must-see attraction. Our friend Tutu and her late father have restored what is, without question, the finest marae in the Cook Islands — significant enough that they’ve applied for World Heritage status. Their cultural tour and show is the most authentic on Rarotonga, and their dinner uses a genuine range of local produce rather than the generic tourist-buffet fare you could get anywhere. Say hello to Tutu from Ross and Janet.

A visit to the Cook Islands Library & Museum Society’s museum on the outskirts of Avarua is worth a proper visit. Say hello to Manager Jean Mason. It’s run by volunteers and is by far the best museum and library on Rarotonga. When I was researching my book, I was able to point out to them that the leg irons they have on display were used by early missionaries to imprison young women who refused to marry their designated husband. The chapter in my book on the Mission period offers some insight into the LMS Church’s impact on Rarotongan society — and it’s not rose-tinted.

Day Trip: Aitutaki — the world’s most beautiful lagoon
Sane & Joe’s pick: If you have one day to spare, fly to Aitutaki. The lagoon really is what the photos show. The Air Rarotonga day tour includes flights, lagoon cruise, snorkelling, and a beach lunch — a long day, and worth every minute.
A note from Ross and Janet Holmes, owners
Janet moaned to me last year that I needed to pamper her on our anniversary. I booked a last-minute Aitutaki day trip with Air Rarotonga — and avoided the dog box. Janet and I have travelled extensively, and Aitutaki has one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world. After the short flight from Rarotonga, there’s an entertaining open-sided truck ride to the lagoon, with a wonderfully knowledgeable local guide. From there you board a beautifully built modern vaka — with a string band on board — for a journey across the lagoon to a series of motus. Time to snorkel, time to walk on two of the motus, and a generous lunch of local produce and freshly caught fish prepared on the boat. A day we won’t forget. A not-to-be-missed trip for anyone on honeymoon, celebrating an anniversary, or who simply wants a great day out.

Events & Markets
Sane & Joe’s pick: Punanga Nui Market on Saturday morning is essential. Local food, crafts, music — most guests visit on their first or second day so they can come back for more.

| Punanga Nui Market | Saturday mornings | Avarua waterfront | Everyone | The big one |

Shopping & Groceries
A note from Ross and Janet Holmes, owners
For unique, handcrafted Cook Islands jewellery, Bergman & Sons at Cooks Corner in Avarua is a must. Say hello to our friend Ben Bergman and his partner and manager, Luke. I’ve made the mistake of taking Janet there too many times — they have one cabinet of their most expensive pieces, which are truly stunning (and will make a real dent in your credit card), alongside more modestly priced pieces. Bring your passport and travel ticket: they sell duty-free.
A note from Ross and Janet Holmes, owners
Janet and I have visited the Bergman Gallery, on the outskirts of Avarua, many times over the years and have bought a lot of paintings and prints for our own home and for Kia Orana Villas — so some of the art on the walls around you during your stay came from there. Their knowledge and expertise in Cook Islands and Pacific art is excellent, and they use the best framers. A beautiful range of paintings from Cook Islands and other Pacific artists. If you love art, it’s worth the trip out to see them.
